Observation details
Although the bird was in known winter territory (29.5788591, -82.2752642), I’ve come twice here before in January and once in December to no avail. This time I hung out quietly here for 40 mins or so until I heard it call and located it. Diminutive Empidonax with proportionately large head, white eye ring and wingbars. I detected it from its quiet “whit” calls and focused on recording it instead of trying to take a pic (this seems to me the ideal documentation for wintering birds of this genus). It was hiding on the South side of the trail and popped up briefly a couple of times but enough for good visuals and recording. I believe this is the first LEFL for the winter of 2023/24.
