similar to previous recording - 5 bouts of hooting.
Observation details
Pair calling along entrance road to lodge, about 0.3 miles from parking lot. Initial response was high wail (usually by female, Howell and Dyer 2023), after I played Spectacled Owl song. I recorded a series of three one-second long wails, about 5 secs apart. Then the hooting series began, and continued for at least 25 minutes, till I left. Each gave a series of 3 to 5 gruff whoops, either overlapping or in quick succession, sometimes solo. The usual number of distinct hoots was 3. It seemed (at times) that one bird gave an initially soft hoot, followed by two emphatic ones; while the other bird gave 3 not-emphatic hoots on an even pitch. At times hard to tell -- from recording -- if one or two birds were calling. But at the time I could almost always note differences in position, i.e. that two were calling. Three recordings attached, made at 9:47, 9:53, and 9:59 pm. The pair crossed and recrossed the road once. I did not spot them, though I scanned with light. Weather, etc: Full moon, clouds moving, a little rain, mild temperature (70's F).
