Observation details
The bird was found on 1 Nov 94, and I was able to search on 3 Nov 94. The bird was found along the Bayside Loop road in the open sandy flat between the road and the bayshore, maybe 150 yards beyond Stover Point. The bird was foraging on the ground in an erect vertical position when stopped, occasionally hopping or flying short distances revealing its bold tail pattern of white (base) and black (distal half). The bird was built like a small thrush, pale whitish below and warm brown above; dark auricular (mask) and contrasting thin whitish eyebrow. The wing was similar in color with the rest of brownish upperparts and maybe a hint of a wingbar, although not show much contrast. No photos were taken by me but my Canadian friend Mike Pawlick took some digiscope film photos that were widely published at the time. One of Mike’s photos of the bird can be found at https//sora.unm.edu/sites/default/files/journals/nab/v049n01/p00067-p00071.pdf I am including a crude cell phone photo from slide film that I took on 3 Nov 94
