Observation details

(rare) Coot with fully white shield extending up entire forehead to crown. Pics. Shield region was noticeably bulbous compared to nearby red-shielded birds and appeared all-white in the field (with hints of yellow) when observed from a distance that was a bit over three yards. Barely visible tinges of red on the periphery of the shield were only noted when reviewing photos, and it matches the marginal extent of red that can be seen in some photographed records of white-shielded coots. While approaching this bird, the difference between this and a red-shielded bird in close association with was beyond conspicuous due to the large protrusion of the white-shielded bird's forehead when observed from a profile view. The forehead also reached higher up towards the crown than that of the red-shielded bird's (and all other coots we passed by while returning to the parking lot, at that).
