Observation details
This bird was a male Bullock’s Oriole. eating suet at a feeder. My wife and I watched the feeder for an hour and 45 minutes from a distance of 25 feet, and the bird came twice; we observed it for about 5 minutes in total. The feeder’s owner, who is a friend, said that the bird had been hanging around for more than a week, and we came specifically to see it. It has an orange breast and face, a black cap, a black line through its eye, black wings with a large white wing patch, and a sharp Oriole bill. It was about the same length as the Northern Cardinal which also came to the feeder, but was slimmer. The only Oriolein Sibley’s guide which matches these characteristics is a Bullock’s Oriole. I am aware that this is an unusual bird for this place and time. I took photos of it with my iPhone, but they are rather grainy. The photos submitted here were made by the feeder’s owner, over several visits by the bird.
