Observation details
*Rare but annual. I had this bird this morning at the pond. I suspected abieticola but it was dark and foggy so could not confirm. I took photos but didn’t review yet. I went back to Stratford to find kestrel again (failure) and saw the same hawk perched up near the rr track entrance. Got it in the scope and realized it was an incredibly obviously northern. Dark throat that bleeds down into the upper breast, *exceptionally* dense and dark bellyband (more than a bellyband, really!), darker brown back, and richly colored overall. I will certainly come back to try and get photos at close range in better light than this AM. This bird was a darkest of the 4 abieticola I have found in CT. What a stunner.
