Observation details
Heard what we thought was an off Wilson's Snipe, until we realized that it was coming from the bush near the camp, not overhead as one would expect from a snipe winnowing. I suggested that this could be a Boreal Owl, so we set off in search of the call. After about 10 minutes of searching, one of our party members found the culprit perched in a Balsam Fir about 3m up. We determined this was indeed a Boreal Owl based on the call we heard, and the dark brown streaked/spotted underparts, as well as its small size. Photos attached.
