Observation details
Fantastic moment coming back from our plots, we saw a breeding pair of this rare species preparing the nest or very probable feedings fledglings, because I saw both the female (in pictures) and male vigorously defended the site. Both, female and male were calling asynchronously (see recordings ML613975677;ML613975972; ML613976143; ML613976260). We saw that the female enters inside a hole in a tree (ML613976645;ML613976675;ML613976714) and also, we noticed that she captured big insects (grasshoppers) (ML613975027). We consider the calls as alarm and probably contact calls with a defensive function aimed to distract us from the nest or chicks and for communication between the female and male. Male was distant (25 meters) measured with a laica rangefinder. We also noticed that there was a small group of white mouse monkeys close. Nonetheless, we did not see the pair actively foraging with the monkey flock.
