Observation details
White-crowned sparrow with dark lores, white only extending to front of eye, and pinkish bill. The 2 dark-lored subspecies, leucophrys and oriantha are considered to be in the same group by Cornell/Birds of the World but with oriantha breeding in the western mountains and leucophrys breeding in the east. Sibley divides them in to two seperate groups, Mountain and East Taiga respectively. In Beadle and Rising's "Sparrows of the US and Canada" they appear to agree with Sibley, and state that dark-lored birds wintering in the west are likely oriantha.
