Media notes
Call from an adult bird looking for its chick which just got plucked off of its mate's back by a Peregrine Falcon. This happened numerous times during our stay at this lagoon and for sometimes days afterwards the adults of the missing chick would continue to search for it with food. This is effectively the call used by adults when they are looking for their chick to feed but momentarily can't find it. My obviously non-scientific assessment is that this particular call sounds more 'mournful' in light of the circumstances but it's possible there is no difference whatsoever. Amplified and high pass filter with Audacity.
Observation details
20 pairs with chicks (one chick was taken by a Peregrine this morning but one nest fledged), 4 active nests (one fledged towards end of count), 7 pairs with 2 chicks; one adult died, apparently suffering some sort of internal injury during the Peregrine attack. Parents of nest that fledged today are incubating second egg.
