Breeding plumage male Northern Shoveler just beyond Aythya raft toward left side of photo
Observation details
Seasonally rare. Breeding plumage male discovered by Adam Vinson in a photo. While standing near me at 0847 he sent a rare bird alert. Jay McGowan at #845 NYS-89 saw us (plus 2 more Cornell students, Isaiah & Ananda Kalukin) & called me for its location: it had been considerably N of #845 fairly close to shore among Canvasbacks. Jay quickly saw it & told me it was close to shore among Canada Geese, Mallards, & diving Redheads. Even with this info it took me nearly an hour to find it in a gap between lobes of Aythya raft dabbing at water surface along with a single drab male American Wigeon. Long low duck; mostly appeared short-necked; bill very long & widest near the tip. Black bill, dark green head, white breast extending to rear above curved forward end of long chocolate brown patch along side, white square on flank, black rear end, black back streaked with white. Digi-scoped photo took another quarter hour. FOY.
