Observation details
Studied this bird in detail on ice as possible Slaty-backed Gull. Adult bird, rather small, size of the smallest nearest HERG. Yellow bill with orange spot on gonys and similar size and shape as that of nearby HERG. What stands out most about the bird is the very deep, dark, pink legs evenly colored throughout. Legs are much deeper, darker pink than any of the numerous nearby HERG's. Head much more modeled than any nearby adult HERG. Slate colored back, same shade as nearby adult LBBG. White tertial crescent similar to nearby adult LBBG and less prominent white scapular crescent. This bird was significantly smaller than the nearby adult LBBG. Eye is pale. I could not discern orbital ring color. Bird was not seen in flight, some photos were taken of spread wing preening. Tail is white. One mirror on P10. I cannot discern obvious "string of pearls" and structure: rather small size and lack of heavy and pot bellied appearance speak against SBGU. Deep dark pink legs and heavily mottled head are remarkable on this bird to consider SBGU. I cannot confirm ID.
