Observation details
First reported at Coal Oil Point by Ryan Seppala on January 13 (and possibly the same bird reported by Dave Compton at Campus Point on January 7). Seen today directly off Coal Oil Point out beyond the surfers. It appeared to be larger than an Eared or Horned Grebe with a thicker and longer bill (almost the length of the head), and a longer neck (though shorter than a Western or Clark’s Grebe). It often held its bill angled down, making the head appeared somewhat peaked in the back. The neck was mostly dark, but somewhat lighter in front. The head was dark capped with whitish gray on the face, and the body was dark.
