Context: everything's iced over and it's 20F. Two Red-breasted Sapsuckers get in a brawl over sap holes. Video ends when I go to stop the fight. The aggressor left to feed in the pines, the defender went back to work on the tree of contention.
Observation details
Here’s a new one: Went out to feed the sparrows sticking close while everything’s sleeted over and heard a squeaking racket coming from under the deodars. Walked over and saw these two on the ground with their feet locked together in battle. Seemed one bird (the defender) had found a good spot at the bar and didn’t want to share with the other (the aggressor). I had no interest in driving an injured bird to rehab on icy roads, so I busted up the fight. They went at it again so I put myself between them and talked to them like a couple of bar brawlers. After the second round, the aggressor flew to the pines to feed and didn't return. One video ends when the second fight began and I stopped filming so I could attend to peacemaking. The second video shows the defender back at work on the tree of contention after the war was over. Apologies for the quality of the cell phone vids, but I thought this hot action was worth sharing.
