This silhouette allows for a nice comparison of body proportions, making this species look slightly longer-tailed than Olive-sided Flycatcher.
Observation details
I first detected this bird at 8:05 a.m. as it gave first a "pip pip" then a "pip pip pip pip" call from about 45 feet up in the top of a large valley oak 102 feet N of the USACE "Tule" interpretive sign along the E side of the Tule River. That valley oak (at 36º03’23”N 118º55’25”W) is due E of where the 8 high-tension power line wires cross from NNW to SSE over the Tule River. Between 8:06 and 8:07 a.m. I got 4 photographs of the bird at this location and was able to clearly see the bright apricot-colored lower mandible on the longish bill, the pale yellowish wash on the central belly, pale lores, and the tufted hindcrown. Based on the color of the pale edges of the bird's median and greater coverts, I suspect that it is an adult. I refound the bird at 8:25 a.m. as it gave "pip pip" and "pip pip pip" calls from about 50-60 feet up in the upper foliage and branches of 2 very tall eucalyptus trees at 36º03’35”N 118º55’19”W near a large pile of dozens of dark railroad ties close to the end of the loop trail. During the 5 minutes I watched the bird (8:25 - 8:30 a.m.) I got 4 more photographs of the bird and was able to see it perched in better profile so as to better gauge body proportions. The distance from the bird's nape to rump was almost exactly the same as from the rump to the tip of the tail (making it look noticebly longer-tailed than an Olive-sided Flycatcher (which is also a slightly shorter species). During this 5-minute observation time, the pewee twice chased individual Yellow-rumped Warblers that were foraging actively quite near the pewee. I saw the pewee with at least one modest-sized insect (a little smaller than a honey bee) in its bill.
