Observation details
*Very rare, although annual in the NE each fall/winter. Long-continuing immature male (I believe) since at least Nov. 9, when found by the Greenwich town tree warden Greg Kramer. With a little luck, this tiny guy has stuck it out through our few cold snaps and enjoyed the mild winter we’ve been having. In my time, he visited the feeders a few times but preferred perching on the fruiting bushes in front of the feeders, giving magnificent views. Cute selasphorus with light orange flanks and chest; pale whitish throat, upper neck, and UTCs; shimmering green back, nape, and top of head; tail feathers with a half orange base and half green tip; strongly pointed wings when perched; and a mostly straight beak with a light curve. A few groggy feathers around the throat indicating male to my knowledge. Disappeared for long periods into the woods, and once flew a few feet from my face in a territorial defense or inquisitive query. Photos to come
