Observation details
Comments from N. Goldberg: Same bird found by Amar Ayyash yesterday. Flew in after we left at around 9:30, Jason Weckstein texted the bird was back and we turned around and scooted back here. Dark mantled gull, bright pink legs, Herring Gull sized bird, smudgy dark color on the eye with a bright pale iris, and a large secondary skirt while sitting. When it flew we could see a string of pearls. Photos taken. Lifer! Comments from G.A. Williamson: Adult Slaty-backed Gull continuing from the previous day, when found by Amar Ayyash and Maarten van Kleinwee. Dark-mantled gull, Herring Gull sized, with pink legs. Broad white trailing edge to wing clearly seen in flight and showing as very visible "secondary skirt" on the folded wing at rest. Wing pattern: p10 with large white mirror and small white tip, p9 with smaller white mirror, white tongue tips showing on p8, p7, and p6 forming a line down to the white tip of p5 ("string of pearls"). Tertial crescent prominent and large; scapular crescent, in comparison to adjacent Herring Gulls appeared slightly but not prominently larger.
