Observation details
*uncommon (a first for here), especially this far west in the sound and away from typical habitat (eg rocks) and usual sites. This species has clearly made a big showing in the Sound this season, so I had been purposefully trying to find one here this winter. While scoping the large rafts of WWSC, I came upon this duck but it was very distant, appearing all dark and short-billed. Thus, I was hopeful and, upon zooming in with my scope, its additional plumage details were revealed to me: a white blaze before the short bill and a discrete circular white spot by the ear; a female or first-year male. I followed it for a while and took some awful photographs (which I will proudly attach) and it eventually departed from the WWSC, drifting gently to the west, where I came off it. First patch bird of the year!
