Observation details
Lower Narramissic River not far from the bridge. Initially a first year and adult male were seen lounging with 5 COGO. I was in my position as they swam up stream, for a good 12 minutes. Than suddenly, the COGO spooked first, spooked not by me but something behind us, for in-flight photos. The liftoff off Greater Scaup in picture 5 shows nicely the secondary patch of the left wing. The first detail of the topography I look for is the shape of this species head profile, smooth and rounded versus peaked of a Barrows. The second bird is clearly a first winter male with overall browner tones and back. This adult male Greater Scaup, has just imprinted Narramissic River on this immature for future Maine birders. Adult male was winter plumage and showing some glossy black (no green seen) on the head and chest with white flanks, underwing. White on the primaries and brighter secondaries are black tipped across the wing. FOY
