Second duet, at 4:58 p.m.
Observation details
When we arrived, the male and female Great Horned Owls were sitting side-by-side in the many-and-skinny-limbed tree. Nearly an hour later, at 4:38 p.m., they performed their first duet. Twenty minutes later, at 4:58 p.m., they performed their second. Then the male hooted at 5:00 p.m., 5:01 p.m., and 5:03 p.m., with no response. Just before 5:04 p.m., they dueted three times, then the male flew off to the north. At 5:09 p.m. the female flew off to the south. At 5:12 p.m. we found the male sitting by the old magpie nest. He hooted. She didn't respond. At 5:14 p.m. he flew to a tall tree to the north, and hooted again. She didn't respond.
