Observation details
**Incredible experience with these gorgeous woodpeckers. Torrey spotted the pair just below the end of the trail in Parcel 8 primary forest, and we later got on a third bird--a second adult male--accompanying them. Immense Campephilus with scarlet crests, buffy faces, and brilliant blood-red bellies with black striping. Skittish, but at some points allowed decent looks while climbing trees or--especially--feeding on Walking Palm fruit. Contact calls were remarkable: high-pitched chipping reminiscent of a warbler or tanager, only occasionally breaking out into brief but rollicking whooping calls. Wings made an impressive whistle in flight. 11/10 bird and experience!
