Observation details
Bright red male, brown wings and tail, originally found by Peter Scott last month. Not present initially, we watched the rather small mudflat area for 45 minutes after arrival without seeing it. We continued walking around the lake, thoroughly searching the western edge and the SW corner without any luck. By 2:56 PM (or earlier) it was on the small area of mudflats near the parking lot (39.4907134, -87.3185266) We watched until 3:39 as it foraged in this area actively, making many short flights and utilizing a new low perch every time. Perches used were fallen logs, stumps, sticks, trash, or just simply sitting on the mud. It was still foraging here when we left. There are a few different places to view these small mudflats, but I like the mowed spit here the most (39.4906477, -87.3171727) To get to this grassy spit with a nice view, walk around the small water-filled ditch just south of the parking lot. You can also view from the trail either west or east of the lot, but viewing from the west is more obscured by vegetation and you might have to step into the cattails.
