Observation details
Continuing likely Red-tailed x Rough-legged hybrid. I was surprised this hawk hit a vole so close to me as it was one of the most skittish buteos I have ever observed. Of note: The lack of the red-tail's ubiquitous dark patagial markings. Square dark black carpal patches of a rough-leg. Belly band is deeper and darker with more blocky patches than a western red-tail. Tarsi are feathered to the toes like a rough-leg. Tail is the color and pattern of an adult red-tailed hawk but it is longer in proportion to the wings and body, more like a rough-legged. Outer primaries are long giving the wings a stretched-out appearance of a rough-legged hawk. Feet appear smaller than a red-tail, much like a rough-legged hawk. I know of one subsequent sighting of this bird, as I recall it was within the week of this sighting.
