Observation details
Wow!!! Was checking the river mouth into the frozen pond for GBHE to no avail so I figured to look for feeders across the street on Howard Drive. While driving back down the road I noticed a large raptor moving SE. I quickly got my bins on the bird and immediately got excited. I wasn’t seeing any white and the bird was exhibiting a unique flight style of 3-4 flaps then a glide. I began my chase down Duane St and followed the somewhat slow flying bird, parking periodically on the side of road (and somewhat dangerously). Each stop the bird would bank a few times, circle a bit, then keep flying. Unfortunately the sky’s are quite overcast so it was hard to get much color. I noticed the slight dihedral when the bird was facing away. No white tail or head, nor white wing patches. Noted that the shoulder area was dark along the base of the wing and the secondary’s on the outside of the underwing more gray, reminiscent of the color scheme of the underside of a Turkey Vulture. The bird flew along Duane Road till it crossed over and headed south. I chased the bird all the way down to the florist shop/vets post. State bird for me and more importantly, a county bird.
