flock flushed (with 40 Pine Siskins) from where they had been feeding out of sight, messy recordings of what ensued; two types evident, Types 2 and 4; pygmy-owl is playback; interval shortened at 0:06, followed by another exodus by the feeding flocks upslope, Types 2, 4, and 6 evident, Type 6 in comparison with Type 4 at 0:11, many more faint calls up to 0:30; not sure what the calls are after 0:37 at fairly high frequecy somewhat like an upside down flock flushed (with 40 Pine Siskins) from where they had been feeding out of sight, messy recordings of what ensued; two types evident, Types 2 and 4; pygmy-owl is playback; interval shortened at 0:06, followed by another exodus by the feeding flocks upslope, Types 2, 4, and 6 evident, Type 6 in comparison with Type 4 at 0:11, many more faint calls up to 0:30; not sure what the calls are after 0:37 at fairly high frequency somewhat like an upside down Type 4 or 6, perhaps an excitement or other call as are the inverted 'U' calls, e.g., at 0:38, which are like the excitement calls of Type 2, but higher pitched (some of those are after 0:44 and on to the end); interval shortened at 1:15, same situation, most of the calls at this point looking like Type 6 or variants, e.g., the three louder calls after 1:30 are like some of the Type 6 of recent years that make me wonder if the local population has been interbreeding, with a wavy extension of the flight call to the right; shortened again at 2:19, the birds coming off the hill this time mostly Type 4; this is the same area as Tim Spahr reported these types earlier this month, although we missed them here 11 days earlier; about 25 crossbills total;
Observation details
[2200m] several flocks erupted, hard to keep track, seen mostly in flight, feeding in confiers upslope out of sight but close; likely entirely separate from above Onion Saddle on FR 42D, but can't be positive; recording attached of three types: 2, 4, and 6; same area as reported previously by Tim Spahr, where FR 42 first crosses Pinery Creek coming down from Onion Saddle; recording can be downloaded from Xeno-Canto XC858475
