Observation details
RARE. Quite a shock to have this bird appear at this season and in only about 20 fathoms of water. Located at edge of the subsurface feature colloquially known as The Hot Dog, we were enjoying a lovely show by a Manx Shearwater when suddenly this bird burst onto the scene. First Mate of the Ocean Princess, Jeff, was chumming the waters using butterfish and bunker, and that was just stinky enough to make this bird come in and do a quick loop around before rocketing off. Large gadfly petrel, boldly patterned black and white, with a heavy bill, and prominent white rump. This was a paler individual with a white hind-collar and a white face. Some identifiable photos were obtained. This appears to be the first winter record for Maryland.
