Observation details
initially seen for a few minutes feeding and walking on lake shore in flooded grass with long straight bills and stance clearly identifying them as snipe. Both birds flew from the lakeshore into woodland where they landed and the trailing feet beyond the tail were visible along with extensive white on the tail tips. The birds were followed to get better views but were extremely wary and flushed. One flew directly past just above eye height through the trees where the feet extending visibly beyond tail in flight were very obvious and easy to see albeit briefly . The light was good with direct sunlight but the wariness of the birds and heat haze made photography difficult. Some poor quality images are attached. The viewers are all very familiar with Latham’s Snipe on the east coast of Queensland and were confident that these birds were atypical for Latham’s.
