Observation details
Lifer! Continuing bird found yesterday by Cédric Duhalde, seen and mostly heard here 37.614557,-122.492051. It stayed deep in the willows surrounding the creek, so I was only able to catch a few brief glimpses of it. In those glimpses, I was able to detect the yellow underside with some streaking, the mostly gray head and two thin white wingbars. It's calls are quite different from most warblers I've heard. Instead of a chip, tink, or check-like call, I thought it sounded kind of like a sparrow. There isn't a particular sparrow that's really similar, but Song and Lincoln's both have calls that at least seem like they could belong to the same family. Interestingly, if not provided with date and location information, Merlin Sound ID identifies these calls as belonging to a Violet-green Swallow. I love how birding takes you places. This was a really charming stroll past the little gardens, each with their own individualized touch but collectively really appealing in an eclectic way. The Song Sparrows certainly approved. It felt like this was a long overdue bird, but at the same time, I realized as I was listening to recordings of the bird's call before coming here this is the first time I've ever specifically chased one. I didn't write this editorial comment until a few weeks after the observation, but I'm super glad to see Cameron also got to come see the bird after what he described as seemingly dozens of dips elsewhere. Congrats to him and big thanks to Cédric!
