Observation details
Conservative count—challenging to determine exactly how many individuals were present. One bird diving actively below the end of the pier, two birds floating on the water beyond the pier, four birds flying south beyond the pier, and three birds in the surf. I also located one bird loafing on the beach just north of the pier. These birds were all far apart from one another, but my count is lower because I only saw three at one given time and want to avoid double counting. One individual was predated upon by a Great Black-backed Gull and another was chased around by a Herring Gull. I also found one deceased individual on the deck of the pier upon arrival. Tiny alcids, black above and white below, stubby bill, short tail, black underwing, white collar, and black neck band. Many photos obtained.
