GHOWs dueting at 4:47 p.m.
Observation details
When we arrived, the pair were in a cottonwood, the male about 25 feet higher than the female. The first recording is of the pair dueting. Then the male hooted three times, without a response from the female. A couple of minutes later a Red-tailed Hawk flew by, heading east. Silence ensued for almost half an hour. The male yawned, and stretched, and preened. The female preened. At 4:46 p.m., four minutes after sunset, the female flew west to a dead, more exposed cottonwood, with fewer limbs. Facing away from him, she hooted, and he hooted in response. Then he flew over and landed on a branch just a few feet away from her. They dueted, and then he attempted a coupling. He landed back on a branch, and then they dueted a couple more times. Then he flew off to the north, and shortly after, she flew off to the north.
