Observation details
Dark-lored adult singing a song where the first half when viewed on the spectogram looks deceptively similar to leucophrys. But after a thorough re-review of both dark-lored ssp, I believe the song best fits oriantha. In the field, the call sounded very flat as expected for oriantha. The closest, loudest call in the recording is of this bird. The many Gambel's in the background have a more metallic tink-quality. This bird's call is flatter, more BLGR-like, lacking the sharp metallic tink of Gambel's. Differences in the call are not as obvious in the recording than in the field, where the difference was distinct enough that we knew the bird was present before seeing it and prompted it into view with oriantha playback. Visually, the darker bill is a good fit for oriantha, but visual alone is generally unreliable to separate oriantha/leucophrys in this region in winter.
