Observation details
Known location for this scarce and endangered bird. Unlike my previous visits to this spot, today I heard the distinctive relatively low-pitched, smooth “seeuweet” call right over my head right as I arrived at the kīpuka, and I was able to watch an adult male foraging at somewhat close range in the subcanopy of koa trees, calling occasionally. Didn’t see it doing any hammering with lower bill, only picking with upper mandible. After taking my eyes off the adult male, I got on another individual and realized it was an adult female. While the male was very bright yellow all around the head, getting duller towards the pale undertail coverts, with quite dark lores, the female was less bright overall, not extensively bright yellow in the head, instead brighter on the throat, and seemed to have a less long/decurved upper mandible (male was super easy to see the distinctive bill shape, but not quite so on the female). also heard some distinctive calls from a second bird to the side of me while watching the female, which also began calling. photos and audio tba. very nice
