Observation details
I do not use bill color for identification of basic plumage Goldeneyes. ( period ). There were a number of birds in the scrum that caught my eye as appearing to be short billed with a ‘balaclava’ look to the head shape. This is a transient feature that may require a period of observation to detect. When it is show by an individual I then assess throat color. White=Common. Gray=Barrows. As Sibley cautions this is a pair of spiecies that requires a “gestalt” to identify when in basic plumage. A gestalt is an opinion. IMHO there were five basic plumage goldeneye on CBC count day. https://www.sibleyguides.com/2010/01/distinguishing-female-barrows-and-common-goldeneyes/
