Observation details
Juv plumage. Upper breast with dark brown vertical streaks, lower breast/belly with thin horizontal streaks.Banded tail, short wings extended only about halfway down the tail, making tail appear long. Yellow cere, yellow eye, yellow bill with black tip. Short, white supercilium gives a fierce expression. Observed intermittently from 7:20 AM until about 7:55 AM. Flying back and forth across the resaca, perching at times on trees along the resaca, including above the bench at the end of the boardwalk. Favored perching trees this morning were on both sides of the resaca, roughly parallel with the center branch of the 3 on the ground in the middle of the resaca. Often flew to the ground to catch and eat prey - probably insects. Some video flight shots in slow motion.
