Observation details
Originally viewed while driving past as it sat in the field beside Rte. 152 in Palmyra.. Initially assumed it was a hawk sitting on top a meal as it appeared puffed up a bit. We slowed the car and took a look from a the other end of the field to confirm it was a bird and not storm debris and when we saw movement we headed back. When we got back it was on the edge of small rut in the field. Sure it wasn't a hawk at this point but not sure what until it emerged from the rut and the unmistakable striped chest/belly and long dark malar stripe was displayed for us. It appeared to be favoring a wing (the closest one to us), and was slowly moving from the middle of the field to the wood line along Cool Road. We contacted Tom Aversa (the Hartland Count Coordinator) and he arrived within about 10 minutes as we relocated to the back side of the woods where it had disappeared. As it appeared to be favoring a wing and also due to it being wildly out of season we decided to affect a capture to bring the bird to Avian Haven. It took some doing to find the bird hunkered down in the undergrowth which near perfectly matched its camouflage. Once relocated, we were able to catch it and secure it for transport. On closer inspection it appeared to be suffering from lack of food and exposure.
