Observation details
A large black bird sitting on a fencepost above a roadkilled deer. It was about the size of a Red-tailed Hawk. It had a naked of feathers black blistered head, large hawklike bill. When it stretched wings, I could clearly see the whiteness of the primary feathers. Bird had whitish feathers near the neck. It does not appear to be in good health. I recently returned from Brazil where this bird is abundant, and they never are this approachable. Tail was squarish and black. This bird is a first for the San Luis Valley. MOB have seen it. It is out of range and season.
