Observation details
*rare. Continuing mega. Started calling within 10 mins of arriving to the big mesquite on the road. Sang consistently starting from roughly 8:20, at least 25-30 times. Sang at the same time as the tiger-heron once. Heard both while standing in one location. Sang so much we had to eventually walk away from it singing! Repeated a series of hoots, one very short warm up, followed always by 5 notes, every 25 seconds or so. Sounded like a small, hoarse dog, attempting to quietly bark. Calm, 52 degrees F, clear skies, quarter moon. Owl sang from three different locations, but the group never saw it fly. Recording ML612438272 is from an iPhone14 Pro with some processing using Audacity. It is a conglomeration of 5 separate recordings. The time gap between hoot series is not representative.
