Observation details
All seen along the 1-mile stretch of Cowpen Bayou where species has been seen on the previous 3 visits to this location. This time: one near NW corner of refuge loop where it was foraging in bayou, second one seen a little further along, third one seen from fishing pier on bayou, where it was a little ways down the bayou on opposite bank. The Limpkins seemed much more skittish and unwilling to approach than on previous visits (have they been harassed or just happened to be on edge this morning?). I try not to hassle them and not get too close, and don't use playback (which wouldn't be needed to find these Limpkins anyway). Large-ish wading birds with largely brown plumage, with white markings becoming dense on head and neck so that that area looks pale from a distance. Bill long, slightly downcurved, orange at base, black or gray at tip. Photos of each bird.
