Media notes
I only saw it hunt on the ground on the mudflats where 15 Killdeer were the next day. I did not see it catch any flying insects.
Observation details
Bird found 12-17-23 in late pm by Peter Scott on Vigo Cty CBC. At about 9 am Don Gorney spotted it flying in ( amazing spotting it in flight ! ) from the south and landing on a small island out in water. He showed it to me through his spotting scope. After a few minutes it flew to the mudflats at north end to feed where Peter Scott had found it the day before. This is a small bird about the size of an Indigo Bunting but with a blood red cap, lighter orange reddish throat and underparts, dark tail, and grayish upperparts. It had a darker grayish line through eye. There were light faint wingbars present. I photographed the bird first in presence of Don Gorney, then Marilyn Smith, and later Vern Wilkins. Vern Wilkins was still taking photos of it when I left. Almost the entire time it was heavy overcast, at one point the bird and I were caught in a snow-sleet downpour and only rarely did the sun poke through.
