Observation details
First found at the 1864 ranch along Long Valley Road in Sierra County California (39.643979, -120.006605). Time was about 1:30 PM, 12/14/23. It was being mobbed by a red tail hawk a couple of ravens and some black Bill magpies. It was an adult bird. I returned later but was not able to find it at the first place. But refound it (approx. 2:45 PM) about a mile north of there. Also along Long Valley Road. The bird was very skittish. Looked for bands on the legs but only got a good look at the right leg where there was no band. See attached photo. Even if it has no leg bands (do falconers band their birds?), there's no way to confirm this bird is a vagrant wild bird. Nuts. :-) UPDATE, 12/15/23: Just looked through some shots from another camera and added a couple of pictures. The one where the hawk is in flight appears to show a narrow leg band on the left foot (visible at the very bottom of the picture).
