Two Rufous-vented Ground-Cuckoos are running around near an army antswarm in the forested gully below the road N of the Sadiri Lodge area entrance station to Madidi NP. They are bill-clapping intermittently (surprisingly quietly) and making lots of noise in the leaf litter. I think the strange gulping sounds were produced by them too. I got a small sample of their sounds. Background includes: an unseen hummingbird. Recorded using a Fostex FR-2LE with a Sennheiser ME62 & Telinga Universal 22" parabola.
Observation details
around the army ants in gully north of the control post, two seen and one more heard upslope singing and glimpsed as it ran through vegetation; seen well about five times, at least twice by each of the four of us; some bill clacking; mostly just glimpsed, quite furtive; RAR's first recording of the (rather quiet) bill claps at close range reveals an odd little 2-note, rather explosive sound with several claps--something we've not heard before;
