Observation details
A very confusing cackler was present on the pond today. I found it very difficult to come up with a matching subspecies for this bird. The bird was small, but seemingly a little larger than a minima (though probably not out of the range of range variation of minima) with a decently long bill for a cackler, reminiscent almost of tavernsr’s or similar in proportion to head length. It was quite dark overall like a minima with a darkish breast. My best guess is this is a large long-billed minima but the bill is rather unsettling to me. Many photos
