Observation details
I heard a loud "queeah" call that I couldn't immediately place, so I started recording and while the recording was running I located the bird. Excellent views from only 15 yards away as it foraged in the well-known apple tree (base of "Pine Hill", 1.4 miles in from locked gate). As soon as I saw the bird I realized it was a RBSA not a RNSA: the head was red and the red extended far down the breast like a bib. I tried to get the recording turned off and get my hiking camera out for a photo, but it moved deeper into the stream area and I just couldn't get it (and my husband was frozen standing around waiting). So this ends up being just my word that I saw no evidence of a hybrid, from what I saw it looked completely red through the head and breast like it was dipped in red. I was hoping maybe there was a difference in the call spectrograms between species, but according to Pieplow the mew calls are indistinguishable within the wide range of plasticity of each species. Audio attached.
