Observation details
First seen far out on lake from Lighthouse Point. Bird eventually swam in closer to the breakwall, then into the boat harbor and out a few times, sometimes as close as 30 yards away. Gray wings, tail and back with small "wisps" of white feathering on side of bird at the waterline. Black tips on wings and tail. Black crown, hindneck, and cheek. Black surrounded black eye. White collar extended partially up back side of neck towards nape. Wedge of back came of back of neck snd extended down to breast, in front of folded wing. Pure white undrrparts. Small triangular bill with black base and pale colored distal half. Opened its wings when diving. It flew short distances a few times, and when it landed it went immediately into a dive. After about 2.5 hours it moved far out onto the lake on the horizon, then flew southwest towards Knife River and out of sight. 1st Lake County record.
