Observation details
***continuing MEGA originally found Friday by Patti and Tim Russell. Discouraged by my murrelet-less frosty pre-sunrise visit, I had gone up to Chickamauga Dam to try from there. At 8:09 a.m. I received a call from Pete Robinson that the bird was back at the boat ramp. It had emerged during the middle of his TV interview!! Try as I might I could not see it from the dam, either to it being underwater or more likely the persistent mist rising off the lake. After arriving back at the boat ramp it was another tense ten minutes before I spotted it again. The Murrelet emerged from the mist as two white dots in the distance, like a beacon, vanishing almost as quickly as they appeared. Waited another minute, and the bird had moved an incredible distance closer! Throughout the morning we watched the bird swim as close as 5 ft away from the dock. I showed the bird to one of the news reporters in my scope, and I think he got footage of it in his camera as well. At one point we could see the bird swimming effortlessly underwater like a Penguin. What an awesome experience! Such a dream to have a bird like this in Chattanooga.
