Observation details
Watched two territorial groups (termed 'clans' in the behavioral ecology literature) displaying at territory boundary on beach; boundary was very apparent to the birds even though there was no physical demarcation. 6+ birds from each group lined up and did a tail-raised, wing-flicking display as shown in the video. At times (not in video) two birds would fight aggressively, locking feet and tumbling in the sand as other birds pecked hard at them. This behavior is well-known in this species, which lives in cooperatively breeding kin groups, as studied by Bob Curry back in the 1980s. Really fun to see them in action.
