Observation details
A record shot of an adult male showing the diagnostic red chest patch lacking in females and juveniles. Its range is restricted to Seram, Ambon and a few nearby islands in the south Moluccas. Sometimes called "Seram Flowerpecker." Flowerpeckers are usually placed in the Dicaeidae but some authors merge this family with the Sunbirds (Nectariniidae). This species prefers to forage in the canopy. Flowerpeckers famously have a specialized digestive tract to handle mistletoe berries, but Ashy has so far only been recorded feeding on nectar.
