Observation details
(Rare) Flushed one bird that flew off calling. Call a repeated squeeky staccato "peek", almost woodpecker like and very distinctive. Attempted a recording and Merlin made an ID but doesn't show any worthwhile pattern to me. (But you can hear it well enough so added to checklist). Life bird. Added details after-the-fact (12.3): Normalized the audio to show the call notes better. Can see the first two notes within 1 second, can see two more notes 3-6 seconds in, with a third being audible but not showing up. Also needed to add details that I only learned later were distinctive of the species - it launched up nearly from under foot flying high into the sky calling, stayed up in the air for a moment (which is when I got Merlin on it) and then dropped precipitously backed down into the grass faster than I could track. Read later that this is classic for the species, which I didn't know at the time.
