Observation details
1st-winter on boat dock with WEGUs and HERGs. Flew in from east and spent most of its time partially obscured and preening. Eventually it flew up and repositioned out of view amongst WEGUs and was not relocated after. Noticeably smaller-billed, slimmer, and longer-winged than WEGUs and HERGs. Bill all black, and head and breast mostly white with coarse streaking fading into a dark belly. Wing coverts were blackish with crisp pale edges. Nearly all scapulars appeared plain dark grayish-brown indicating preformative molt into 1st-winter plumage. In-flight, showed entirely blackish primaries and whitish rump and uppertail with thin black band on tail. Photos.
