Observation details
***mega; 3rd ABA record and 1st Texas record. The bird finally showed well, albeit briefly, in the Maintenance Area (25.99772, -97.56972) at 9:50am. Thank you to Peter from Wisconsin for spotting it and getting us on it quickly. The bird flew east about 30 meters after sitting still for 2+ minutes. The mass of birders showed up and some, but not all, were able to get on it once or twice in the next 10-15 minutes. To my knowledge, it had not been seen again when I left a little before noon. An oddly proportioned passerine with upright posture, large blocky head, and stout gray bill. Black cap with gray lores. Gray collar. Black wings with messy buff wing bars. Secondaries edged white and tertials broadly edged white. Back was a messy mix of black and rufous. Gray rump. Dark eye. Legs dark gray/black. It gave one soft, mournful "mew" call, but otherwise silent.
